Sedgewick Park

The Town of Sedgewick asked us to submit a design to upgrade their main street park. The idea was to create a space where people would like to spend time, and be accessible for as many residents as possible.

Because the property was all sloped, we decided to do some extensive re-grading, making the slopes as gentle as possible in the space we had. Then we wanted to create as much level space as possible. The only way to do that on a hillside is to create tiers.

The lower tier we decided to add a large paverstone patio, covered by a pergola. Although open, these structures create shade. If families wanted to enjoy some food or drink, or perhaps just relax and look at the activity on Main Street, this would be a great spot. We installed some park benches there as well. You can access this elevated area right off the street on a pathway that is sloped properly to accommodate wheelchairs.

We had to keep in mind drainage from the neighbouring property, so we designed and built a dry riverbed with locally donated boulders. It is functional, but also beautiful to look at. We then build a bridge to cross over it, with a path that leads you to steps and the upper tier of the park.

For people needing assistance, there are parking spots at the top of the park, and easy access to the upper tier from there.

We built a large retaining wall with Redi-Rock, and this created a "look out" area. It is a level, grassed area that you can sit, or stand, by that gives you a view over the downtown area. There are a few trees that will eventually give shade, and another bench to rest on.

The gently sloped lawn from there we hoped would be fun for the younger kids.

Around the perimeter, where a steeper slope was unavoidable, we planted a variety of bushes and trees; and bordered it with a round rail fence.

Here's the cool thing:

It was decided to dedicate the park to Queen Elizabeth and her Diamond Jubilee celebration, so a plaque was made and installed in the park. The town then invited the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta to dedicate the park in Her honor with a big ribbon cutting ceremony.

We were very proud to be a part of it, and really enjoyed working with the Town of Sedgewick. They made working with them very easy, and are some of the nicest people we have ever worked with. Thank you for trusting us to tackle this project for you.
