Emerald Hills

We were asked to build several complicated retaining walls for the Emerald Hills development in Sherwood Park.

Genstar Developments and Select Engineering worked with us to design these one-of-a-kind walls. There are some beautiful waterways running through the development, and these walls accomodate roadways crossing over them.

These walls have all kinds of unique features. The first is that they are built in water. The granular base is very thick, wrapped in textile, and protected with rip rap.

The arches appear to run through, but are false openings with custom pieces creating the look of a bridge.

At the top of the wall there is a row of free-standing blocks that have a force protection heavy cable running through them, as a safety feature for vehicles.

There are pillars with plaque inserts, and charcoal coloured caps. Then there are custom powder coated railings in between each pillar.

We think they are gorgeous, and they received a lot of attention in the industry.

We built two of these (four walls in total), and then we built one a little differently.

Further upstream, they installed a large concrete box over a stream. Then we built walls on either side of it, an archway, pillars, force protection, and custom railings. Now a small river actually runs through it! Pretty cool.

And finally, we built a matching style small wall as the centre piece for a traffic circle.

Genstar and Select Engineering kept us busy over the course of a few seasons, and we were so happy that they wanted us to build these incredible features for them. Thank you for the work!
